Ryan on Politics

Hey!  Someone finally responded!  From now on if anyone would like for me to post anything go ahead and e-mail me.  This is from Ryan (etburyan):

Domestic
Economic
Social Security-I am for a system in which people responsibly save their own money. Dependence on Social Security is a poor choice that leads people to say that they don't make enough from it, when in all honesty, they shouldn't rely on it.
National Debt-The government should work within budget ALL of the time. In times of emergency they should dip into their own savings. If citizens should be responsible money managers, so should the government.
Corporate Welfare-Subsidies to industries that are failing should be immediately halted. Businesses should receive preferential government treatment in bidding only for certain behaviors (ie. environmentally sound behavior)
Welfare-This system should be reworked to a program which finds jobs for the citizen. A Workfare type system. Under my position on taxation, money for this would come from local governments and be under their jurisdiction. This would mean more direct control of who is on welfare.
Healthcare-Healthcare for those who do not have it from their employer should not expect money from the government, but from private benefactors. There would be less tax strain on private citizens because of tax reform.
Tax Reform-The 16th amendment should be repealed. Withholding tax should be done away with. Money should be paid directly to local governments who give an allotment to the state and the state to the federal. This would put more control back into the hands of citizens.
Out-sourcing-Jobs being outsourced is a direct indication of the inability of US workers to compete. Nothing should be done to artificially manufacture jobs in the US
Moral
Abortion-The possible lives of people should be valued over convenience of a citizen. This is not a biblical issue, but an issue of there being no right to privacy being implied in the constitution and also the need to protect lives.
Same-sex Marriage-Constitutionally, the government should not stop same-sex civil unions. My opinion is that separation needs to be made between religious unions and civil ones. Religious officials should NOT preform civil Unions. There should be a separation between Civil Union and marriage. One religious and the other legal.
Other
Church/State Issues-The First amendment guarantees free exercise and freedom from laws establishing religion. This in no way limits the right of government officials to maintain their religion while performing duties. I do agree, that laws should not be made that establish some religions over the other.
Environment-Businesses should be held accountable for their environmental misdeed in perpetuity. This would cause the actual cost of environmental problems on businesses instead of on taxpayers. This in turn would make them focus on environmental problems.
Energy-reliable, clean energy needs to be found but will become available as it becomes economically sound to do so. No government mandates or subsidies are needed.
Education-A total revamp needs to occur. The bureaucracy should be taken out and teachers should be allowed to teach. The accountability should come from other teachers, not national test. Teachers Unions should have no authority over teacher accountability.
Immigration-Immigration quotas for all countries, but Latin American nations in particular, should be increased. This would allow the workers that our nation depends on to liver here, but also would require taxes of them instead of giving government services for free. Illegal immigrants should be taken back to their home country. Children of illegal immigrants should not be given citizenship. A lottery should be given for a large portion of the quotas so that there is equal opportunity for rich and poor alike to immigrate.
Election Reform- Do away with the Electoral College. In today’s age when everyone has the opportunity to be educated about the candidates, it serves no purpose and it keeps voter turnout lower.
Patriot Act-Get rid of it. It will not stop terrorism and it only gives the government power that it should not have.

International
Iraqi War-I disagreed with going in from the start. Now that we are there we should hold a referendum as to what the Iraqi people want and then follow it. If it says get out immediately, then do it. If it says wait until Iraqi security forces are sufficient, then do it.
UN involvement-The UN needs to be reformed a little, but that is no reason for the US not to be involved. I personally believe that it should be used as a place to discuss issues and for charity to poorer nations. I don’t think that it is successful in peacekeeping. I believe every nation does what is best for itself as far as foreign affairs go. The UN doesn't change that. It only gives nations a venue to complain if someone else makes them mad.
War on Terror-This is a war against a mentality. Create international hatred for terrorism and each nation can try to stop it in their own country. Some won't but many will. Simply do to them what was done to Libya.

Topic of Discussion?

OK, I'm bored at work, and Ryan's not helping me out.  So, here is the first topic of discussion: boxers or briefs?  Just kidding.  Here is an interesting article I came across this morning by a man named Peter Kreeft.  I've only read bits and pieces by him, but he's got some good things to say.  The article is entitled "Is there Sex in Heaven?"  And for your information I was looking up Peter Kreeft, not sex.  He makes some interesting points about human nature.  Let me know what you think, if you do.

Welcome...

Hey guys, welcome.  As I said on my site, I wanted to start a blog where everyone could discuss some of life's deeper issues while saving their homepages for more down to earth, day to day stuff.  I hope everyone will enjoy it.  I've got to get to work, so I'll go ahead and let someone else start it up.

Later...
